Buying guides

How to choose SCX24 tires.

Three decisions: wheel size, tire height, compound.

Tires are the highest-value upgrade on an Axial SCX24 — and the easiest to buy wrong. The catalog is full of 1.0, 1.2, and 1.3-inch options from 48mm to 65mm tall, in everything from scale mud-terrain treads to sticky comp pins. This guide walks the three decisions in order, then gives the best verified pick for each route. Every product below is a real card from our live catalog with its exact catalog name, price, retailer, and link.

Decision 1: stay 1.0 inch, or step up to 1.3?

Your SCX24's stock wheels are 1.0 inch, and any 1.0-inch tire is a drop-on change. Stepping to 1.3-inch tires means buying 1.3-inch beadlock wheels too — but it unlocks 64mm tires, real ground clearance under the axles, and the big-tire look. There is also a 1.2-inch middle step. Decide the wheel first; every later choice hangs off it.

Decision 2: how tall?

Stock SCX24 tires run about 48-54mm. Taller tires roll over obstacles and lift the axles, but they raise the center of gravity, can rub at full steering lock, and make the stock servo work harder. The sweet spots: 52-55mm for a stock-geometry truck that still sidehills well, 57-58mm for trail builds that want a little more clearance, and 64-65mm only when clearance is the whole point of the build.

Decision 3: tread and compound

Match the tread to your ground. Mud-terrain treads are the all-rounders for dirt, trails, and mixed rock. Comp pins put dozens of small lugs on the rock and are the fastest route up clean granite and indoor courses. Sticky compounds (Injora's S5 is the common one) grip noticeably harder than standard rubber on rock, at the cost of faster wear. Finally: pre-mounted tires arrive glued on wheels — zero bench time — while tires-only sets assume beadlock wheels you already own.

Staying 1.0 inch: the best stock-size picks

These all mount on your stock wheels or 1.0-inch beadlocks. Start here if the truck is otherwise stock.

SCX24 tire FAQ

What size tires does an SCX24 run stock?

Every SCX24 variant (Deadbolt, C10, JLU Wrangler, Bronco, Gladiator, Base Camp, Power Wagon) runs 1.0-inch wheels with tires roughly 48-54mm tall. Any 1.0-inch tire in this guide mounts on the stock wheels or 1.0-inch beadlocks with no other changes.

Can I put 1.3-inch tires on my stock SCX24 wheels?

No. Tire size follows the wheel: 1.3-inch tires need 1.3-inch beadlock wheels. The swap is worth it if you want 64mm rubber and the ground clearance that comes with it, but budget for the wheels as well as the tires, and expect to check fender clearance at full steering lock.

How tall a tire is too tall on an SCX24?

About 64-65mm is the practical ceiling. Taller rubber raises the center of gravity (the truck tips more easily on sidehills), can rub the body and fenders at full lock and full articulation, and works the stock servo and motor harder. Most owners land at 54-58mm for trail running and save the 64mm tires for clearance-focused builds.

Are sticky-compound tires worth it on a mini crawler?

On rock, yes — the difference is not subtle. Super-soft sticky compounds like Injora's S5 deform around rock edges and grip where standard rubber slides, and at SCX24 prices the upgrade costs $10.49-$15.99 for a set of four. The trade-off is wear: sticky tires wear faster on abrasive rock and hardpack trails, so trail-only trucks are fine on standard rubber.

Do I need new foams or inserts when I change tires?

If your new tires come with sponge or foam inserts, start with those. Tall, soft tires (62mm and up) benefit most from silicone inserts, which keep the sidewall from folding under the truck's weight without the bounce of foam — the MEUS silicone inserts ($12.99) are made for 68-72mm-class 1.3-inch tires. On stock-height 1.0-inch tires, inserts are a tuning nicety, not a requirement.
