Buying guides
Best RC crawler tires.
Grip is everything — here's what actually works, at verified prices.
Tires are the single most important part of your crawler. A $200 truck on great tires will out-crawl a $600 truck on bad ones — it's not close. But the tire wall at your hobby shop is overwhelming: compounds, heights, widths, inserts. This guide cuts through it with the tires experienced builders actually run, at prices we've verified by hand across 3,545 deals.
Compounds: the 30-second version
Softer rubber grips better but wears faster. Pro-Line G8 and JConcepts Green are the soft all-around compounds most drivers want — grippy on rock, reasonable life. Pro-Line Predator is the super-soft comp compound: maximum stick on clean rock, faster wear, squirmy on sidehills. Unless you're competing, G8 or Green is the answer.
Best 1.0 tires (1/24 micro crawlers)
Micro tires, micro prices — but the performance gap is just as real.
Pro-Line Hyrax 1.0, pre-mounted — $24.99
The most popular micro crawler tire for a reason. Predictable on rock, dirt, and indoor courses. Pre-mounted at AMain — bolt on and go.
Pro-Line Maxxis Trepador 1.0, pre-mounted — $24.99
More aggressive tread for loose dirt and mulch. If your spot is loamy rather than clean rock, the Trepador digs where the Hyrax spins. Same $24.99 at AMain.
INJORA 1.3" Mud Paw 64x24mm (4) — $12.59
The budget standout: four sticky S5-compound tires for $12.59 (down from $17.99) direct from INJORA. A legitimate cheap way to re-tire a micro truck.
INJORA 1.0" All-Terrain 61x21mm (4) — $11.19
Four soft all-terrain tires for $11.19 (reg $13.99). Hard to argue with at the price — great for a second set or a beater truck.
Best 1.9 tires (1/10 trail & scale)
The heart of the hobby — 1.9 is the standard 1/10 trail tire size. Sweet spot: 120–125mm tall.
JConcepts Ruptures 1.9" Green, 125mm (2) — $28.50
The comp favorite. Tall at 4.92 inches, Green compound, and a tread that just works on rock. $28.50 a pair at Hobbies Galore.
Pro-Line BFG Krawler T/A KX 1.9" G8, 121mm (2) — $24.99
The licensed BFG in G8 compound — scale looks, genuine performance. $24.99 a pair at AMain makes it one of the best value top-tier tires.
Pro-Line Flat Iron XL 1.9" G8, 121mm (2) — $24.99
The XL brings the classic Flat Iron tread up to 4.76 inches tall. $24.99 at Singer Hobbies — big grip per dollar.
Team Ottsix Voodoo KLR TrailSpec 1.9/4.7, 119mm (2) — $25.00
The Voodoo KLR has a cult following for loose and loamy terrain where other tires pack up. $25 a pair direct from Team Ottsix.
JConcepts Tusk 1.9" Green, 106mm (2) — $27.99
A shorter 4.19-inch option for drivers who want a lower center of gravity. Green compound, $27.99 at 997 RC Raceway.
Pro-Line BFG Krawler Predator 1.9", 106mm (2) — $32.99
The Predator-compound BFG for maximum stick — the comp-day special. $32.99 at Key City Hobby.
Running 2.2 wheels? The JConcepts Hold 2.2 (5.25" tall) is $31.50 a pair — 25% off at JConcepts direct. See all verified rubber on our tires page, sorted tallest-first.
Tire prep matters more than tire choice
Vent them
Two small holes per tire let trapped air escape so the carcass wraps around rocks instead of bouncing off. A leather punch or heated pin — clean holes, not tears.
Upgrade the foams
Stock foams are the hidden weak link. Dual-stage foams — firm inner for sidehill support, soft outer for conforming grip — are the single best tire-related upgrade you can make, and they cost less than the tires did.
Match height to terrain
Taller isn't automatically better. 4.5–4.9 inches is the 1/10 sweet spot for mixed terrain. Go taller for huge rocks, shorter for a lower CG on sidehills. Our tires page sorts by height so you can shop your number.
Crawler tire FAQ
What are the best RC crawler tires for rocks?
For 1/10, the Pro-Line Hyrax 1.9, JConcepts Ruptures 1.9, and Pro-Line BFG Krawler T/A KX are the three tires you see winning. For micro 1/24, the Pro-Line Hyrax 1.0 and Maxxis Trepador 1.0 dominate. Soft compounds (Pro-Line G8, JConcepts Green) grip clean rock best. The honest answer: any of the top-tier tires properly vented with good foams will outperform a 'better' tire run stock.
Do bigger RC crawler tires perform better?
Taller tires roll over obstacles more easily and add ground clearance, but they also raise the center of gravity and strain the drivetrain. For 1/10, the sweet spot is 4.5–4.9 inches tall (120–125mm). Going taller than 5.25 inches helps on huge rocks but makes the truck tippy. Match tire height to your terrain, not your ego.
Should I vent my crawler tires?
Yes, for most crawling. Two small vent holes per tire let air escape so the carcass conforms to rocks instead of bouncing like a balloon. Pair vented tires with dual-stage foams — firm inner for sidehill support, soft outer for grip. It's the biggest free performance gain in the hobby.
What is the difference between G8 and Predator compound?
Pro-Line's G8 is their soft, grippy all-around compound — great on rock, good life. Predator is their super-soft comp compound: maximum grip on clean rock, but it wears faster and can feel squirmy on sidehills. JConcepts Green is roughly equivalent to G8. For most drivers, G8/Green is the right call; Predator is for comp days.
Are cheap crawler tires any good?
The budget options have gotten surprisingly decent — the INJORA 1.3-inch Mud Paw tires at $12.59 for four are a legitimate budget pick for micro trucks, and we list them because the price is verified. But for 1/10, genuine Pro-Line and JConcepts tires at $25–$33 a pair remain the performance benchmark. Cheap tires with great foams beat expensive tires with stock foams, though — prep matters more than brand.
