How to build super class tires.

Cut, glue, dominate β€” the extra-wide tire technique.

No manufacturer sells a tire wide enough for Super class, so comp builders make their own: slice the tread bands off eight 2.2 crawler tires and glue them edge-to-edge into four extra-wide monsters. This guide covers the materials, the steps, and the tips β€” all in our own words. Technique by Dlux Fab RC. Prices verified Oct 11, 2026.

What super tires are and why

WRCCA Super class allows 2.2" wheels with no width limit, and grip wins courses. A stock 2.2 crawler tire is roughly 1.7" wide β€” a glued super tire doubles that. The extra footprint means more rubber on the rock, more sidewall to conform, and a contact patch that stock tires can't touch. Every serious Super rig runs them.

Materials list

8Γ— donor tires β€” $160 in Dlux Goats

Hot Bodies Rover 2.2 in white-dot (soft) compound was the classic β€” 2 per super tire β€” but it is discontinued: used and NOS Rovers surface at whatever the market asks, so they are the unpriced variable in this build and we will not pretend otherwise. The priced route is the modern substitute: Dlux Goat 2.2 comp tires at $40 per pair from Dlux Fab (3 compounds, in stock β€” verified Oct 13, 2026). Eight donors = four pairs = $160. Dlux Fab Super wheels β€” $175

Extra-wide 6" wheels built for glued super tires. Assemble with the Lexan wrap + E6000 and cure overnight before mounting. Super wheels at Dlux Fab Β· See comp crawler deals

Thin CA glue β€” ~$29

Loctite 406 (wicking grade) for joining tread bands edge-to-edge. Thin CA wicks into the seam and locks fast β€” this is the critical bond. See comp crawler deals

Medium CA glue β€” $9.99

AKA Premium tire glue for mounting finished tires to wheels. Apply a few inches at a time, press, repeat around the bead. See comp crawler deals

Shop supplies

E6000 or Shoe Goo (wheel assembly), Lexan sheet strip, craft-store foam sheets (custom foams), Dremel with stone wheel, curved Lexan scissors, alcohol wipes, and IC-2000 rubber-toughened CA for repairs.

What the materials actually cost

Priced subtotal with Goats as the donors: $373.99 (donors $160 + Super wheels $175 + thin CA $29 + medium CA $9.99). The shop supplies above stay unpriced on purpose β€” E6000, Lexan sheet, foam, and wipes are shop staples most builders already own, not build parts β€” and if you go hunting used Rovers instead, they replace the $160 donor line at whatever they cost you.

The build, step by step

  1. Assemble the Super wheels. Wrap the Lexan strip around the wheel centers and bond with E6000. Let cure overnight β€” don't rush this; the wheel is the foundation.
  2. Cut the tread bands. Using curved Lexan scissors, cut along the molded line where the tread meets the sidewall on each donor tire. You're keeping only the tread band β€” eight bands total.
  3. Flatten the edges. Hit the cut edges with a Dremel and stone wheel until they're flat and even. Uneven edges mean weak seams.
  4. Wash everything. Scrub the tread bands in hot soapy water, rinse, and wipe with alcohol. Mold release and oils kill CA bonds β€” this step is non-negotiable.
  5. Glue bands into wide tires. Butt two tread bands edge-to-edge and wick thin CA (Loctite 406) into the seam. Work in short sections, hold until set, and check alignment as you go β€” a crooked seam makes a lumpy tire.
  6. Mount to wheels. Apply medium CA to the wheel bead a few inches at a time, press the tire down, and work around the circumference. Don't stretch the tire while mounting β€” let it sit naturally on the bead.
  7. Make custom foams. Cut foam sheets to fill the extra-wide carcass. Super tires need custom foams β€” nothing off the shelf fits. Layer and trim until the tire holds its shape without bulging.
  8. Final bead gluing. Once foams are in, run a final bead of medium CA around both beads. Let cure fully before running.

Tips that matter

Scrub new tires before gluing

Fresh rubber ships with mold release on it. If you skip the wash, your seams will fail mid-course. Hot soapy water, then alcohol β€” every time.

Don't stretch while mounting

Pulling the tire tight distorts the glued seam and creates thin spots. Seat it relaxed on the bead and let the glue do the work.

IC-2000 is for repairs, not builds

Rubber-toughened CA is great for fixing a torn seam at the event, but it's too thick for the initial edge-to-edge joints. Build with thin, repair with tough.

Match your compounds

All eight donors should be the same compound. Mixing soft and medium across the set gives you unpredictable grip corner to corner.

Super tire FAQ

What are super tires in RC comp crawling?

Super tires are extra-wide tires built for WRCCA Super class competition. Since no manufacturer sells a tire wide enough, builders cut the tread bands off multiple 2.2 crawler tires and glue them edge-to-edge into one wide tire, then mount them on extra-wide Dlux Fab Super wheels.

How many donor tires do I need?

Eight Hot Bodies Rover 2.2 tires in white-dot (soft) compound β€” two per super tire, four super tires per rig. Because Rovers are discontinued, most builders now use Dlux Goat 2.2 comp tires or source used Rovers.

What glue should I use?

Thin wicking CA (Loctite 406) for joining tread bands edge-to-edge, and medium CA (like AKA Premium tire glue) for mounting the finished tires to the wheels. Keep IC-2000 rubber-toughened CA on hand for trail repairs.

Do I need special wheels?

Yes β€” standard 2.2 wheels are far too narrow. Dlux Fab Super wheels ($175) are 6-inch-diameter extra-wide wheels designed specifically for glued super tires.
